About developing a winning mentality.

You don’t have to be a sportsperson or politician, to win;
In life, whatever our vocation or calling,
We are constantly striving to achieve our goals.

And we need to win. Not sometimes, huun huun.
Or once in a while, nope!
We must WIN AT ALL TIMES!

We must WIN to achieve our daily goals at home.
To reach our educational goals in school;
And to overcome challenges at work.

We must WIN to realize our life ambitions.
And be the success that we desire.

But how do we win on all these fronts?

By developing a WINNING MENTALITY.

The following 7-steps will help you develop that winning mentality that will serve you well in life:

1. Choose HAPPINESS

For me, being happy alone, is winning. Therefore,
A winning mentality must start with a winning spirit: HAPPINESS!
The cheerful thing is that happiness is a choice.
So each day, you must choose to be happy.
Don’t leave your happiness to external factors such as bad weather, flood, too much traffic, bad network, and a host of others.
Believe me, there are too many of such elements that are beyond your control. So, don’t leave your joy in their hands.

Happiness is easier and better sustained when it flows from within.

2. Adopt a POSITIVE ATTITUDE
Always identify and appreciate the positive side of things,
The positive side of people, and of situations

Remember the saying: “nothing comes from corn, but corn”.
The winning spirit of Happiness and a positive attitude will help you create a force field of positive energy around you, thereby attracting other positive circumstances that will aid you towards your goals.

Believing there will be a rainbow after the clouds will go a long way in how you see, and take advantage of opportunities.

3. Focus on Your GOALS
According to Mike Krzyzewski, one of the most successful coaches in American basketball, “Imagination has a great deal to do with winning.”
Visualize you, attaining your aims, and focus on that bigger picture.
Keeping your eyes on that destination will help you cope with,
And overcome the distractions of all obstacles on your mission.

4. Be CONFIDENT
It is said that self-confidence is the starting block of all great successes and achievements.

Therefore, believe in YOU!
And believe in your ability to achieve.
Remember “Fearless minds climb soonest unto crowns”
-Shakespeare

5. IMPROVE Yourself
However good and confident you are, you are not perfect!
You are not even the best you, you can be!
Therefore, know thyself and improve thyself.

What are your shortcomings? How can you overcome them?
What are your strong points? How best can you deploy them?
What can you do today that will make you better tomorrow?
What skills can you learn that will make you function more efficiently in the nearest future?
How can you better your circumstances: your people and environment?

According to a serial winner, former multiple times NFL MVP, Roger Staubach “Winning isn’t getting ahead of others. It’s getting ahead of yourself.”

6. Don’t ACCEPT DEFEAT
According Henry Ford: “Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.”
It is ok to fail, as long as you don’t stay down.
Don’t succumb to adversity;
Don’t stay down when life knocks you down.
Even the greatest boxer in history, Mohamed Ali suffered a few losses, but he is still regarded as the greatest of the pugilist art.

Use every setback as motivation to rise again and strive again.
Be resolute in your determination and
Keep going till you reach your goal.

7. Embrace EXCELLENCE
Make excellence a habit.
Don’t settle for less.
Always try harder. Always do better. Always be faster.
Always exceed limit, except speed limit.

In everything, always do more than average.

Remember the wise words of Vince Lombardi:
“Winning is not a sometime thing; it’s an all time thing.
You don’t win once in a while, you don’t do things right once in a while, you do them right all the time. Winning is habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.”

Therefore, imbibe the better habit of winning.

    Thanks for this word. I agree to all the 7 steps to developing a Winning Mentality, especially the 6th one of DON’T ACCEPT DEFEAT.
    However, I will like to know more on how one can FOCUS ON HIS/HER GOALS in this part of the world where the quest to survive itself is a ‘Distraction’ as many persons move between jobs and are pressured to do several things just to earn a living.
